Pakistan’s mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who continues to represent Quetta Gladiators in PSL 10, has revealed the reason behind dropping his signature wicket celebration style that once made waves in the cricketing world. Abrar’s head-shake celebration after dismissing batters had become a well-known sight, particularly catching attention during the Champions Trophy match against India, where he sent off Shubman Gill with his trademark gesture. However, it also sparked criticism from some circles.
In an interview with Geo News in Lahore, Abrar opened up about his decision to move away from the celebration style. “I started this celebration in the previous edition of the PSL and continued it during matches in South Africa, and there was never a problem,” said Abrar. “But during the Champions Trophy match against India, it became a bit of an issue. I initially intended to continue with it, but I realized some people didn’t appreciate it. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiments, so I decided to drop it.”
Abrar also talked about his focus on improving his bowling skills, especially in the death and middle overs with the new ball. “I’ve been working on developing my skills in those phases, and I’m seeing the results. The Quetta Gladiators squad is strong, and we just need one win to build momentum,” he added. He also praised team mentor Sir Vivian Richards, calling him a legend whose words continue to inspire and energize the players.
Speaking about teammate Mark Chapman, Abrar said, “Mark knows the conditions here very well. He has scored runs consistently, and we’re hopeful he’ll continue his form.”
Looking ahead, Abrar expressed his ambitions to excel in all three formats of the game. “I want to become a top bowler across formats. For that, I know I need to improve my fitness. I also realize how important it is to contribute with the bat, and I plan to focus on my batting over the next six months.”
